Branding: Not So Easy
Posted by Drew on December 22, '08
I've developed a couple news management systems under random, vague names because it's so difficult to come up with a name, a logo, and a branding scheme. Moreover, it's extremely hard to come up with a name that isn't already taken.
Simple Is Usually The Answer
I almost always end up on the less complicated path when it comes to developing things. Visually elements look better when there is less to look at. It sounds strange, but you can emphasize key elements and cause less confusion for the user.
When it comes to naming, I've gone down the easy path, but I haven't come up with anything I like that isn't already taken. I've tried 'pie', 'snap', and a bunch of other random one word names for the news management system. I wanted to convey a message of 'simplicity', and I needed a name that would go with that theme.
Easier To Develop
If you have a name for your site, cms, app, etc.. it's a lot easier to develop for. The name gives way to an identity. From the name, you can develop the look and feel of the site, the slogans, etc..
That's what my goal is. I'm currently using this 'News Management System' on my site, for this blog, right now. However, I do want to develop a brand and identity for a full system that is more user friendly (wysiwyg editor, user management, gallery, etc..). The system works for me because I know it inside and out (because I built it) but, I want one that I can use for clients to manage their own content.
First Things First
I need to come up with a name. That is the first step, and then I'll move on to building the site. We'll see how that goes. I haven't had much luck thus far, but I'll keep with it until I come up with a name that sticks. If anyone has a good name for a CMS that hasn't been used before, shoot me a message. I'll be sure to give you credit ;)
